Yes, I know that a large snowstorm was predicted over the weekend for the east coast but the airline tickets were purchased and besides a lot of times the weather people are wrong or mother nature changes her mind….not this time though.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-T9onwoMkehc/VrS5A9hKsVI/AAAAAAAAOmc/RsQW45pvGME/s1600-h/2016-01-21-17.17%25255B19%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-21-17.17" border="0" height="285" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_SUmoAJiOw0/VrS5CMNTm2I/AAAAAAAAOmg/q8XkJAdXAdE/2016-01-21-17.17_thumb%25255B17%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-21-17.17" width="504" /></a>We arrived, unpacked and then went exploring. The hotel was only about 4 blocks from the capitol so enjoyed our walk over to see it late afternoon that first day we arrived. It is a beautiful building despite the scaffolding around the dome. The dome getting a major restoration inside and out. <br />
<br />
The next day my niece gave us a tour of the inside. She is working for a Nebraska senator and has been through it lots of times and given tours to other constituents so knew all the things to point out to show us. Loved hearing the history and seeing the beautiful building.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gRitYe6Ghj8/VrS5DHpBGWI/AAAAAAAAOmk/LQWtrJfxLPU/s1600-h/2016-01-22-09.03%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-22-09.03" border="0" height="545" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Q6-CJcfA-i8/VrS5ELPu3hI/AAAAAAAAOmo/gLowvrqVImg/2016-01-22-09.03_thumb%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-22-09.03" width="304" /></a>We were thrilled to also tour the White House. We had to put in a application several months ahead of time with all the proper credentials and had to show those credentials at several security check points before allowed inside but it was worth it. The photo above is the front hall as we area about to exit the White House. I especially love this photo below I took from inside the White House looking at the Washington Monument.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HRSV1zvXUBc/VrS5FKJRGRI/AAAAAAAAOms/9XI9Mqxfnjw/s1600-h/2016-01-22-08.46%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-22-08.46" border="0" height="537" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-n2u10_UrD-I/VrS5F9Cc_lI/AAAAAAAAOmw/z2xcnvOrpOI/2016-01-22-08.46_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-22-08.46" width="304" /></a>We did all this on Friday morning and so far no snow so everything was great. My brother and wife (mom and dad to my Washington DC based niece) just happened to be in DC too. They were vacationing and were staying closer to where my niece lived but we had met up to do the tours and eat lunch together that day. After lunch we all took the Metro to Arlington Cemetery. We knew government offices and all the Smithsonian museums were closing at 1:00 pm but since it was not snowing we headed off to the cemetery anyway. There was a sign outside that said the visitor’s center was closed but the gates were open so we walked in. Graves were still decorated with the wreaths laid on them at Christmas and it started to snow while we were there, very beautiful. We didn’t get much of a chance to but glimpse at the Tomb of the Unknown Solder before we were asked to leave as the cemetery was closed. Rather disappointing as it would have only taken us a few minutes to pay our respects, watch the guard and snap a few photos but we hiked back out without protest.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AQoLEHBxS3U/VrS5INhgfCI/AAAAAAAAOm0/l0JP8IfUoMs/s1600-h/2016-01-22-14.13%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-22-14.13" border="0" height="285" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JWR6_tDX_nM/VrS5I5mZAfI/AAAAAAAAOm4/5_J3CH9Q1t0/2016-01-22-14.13_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-22-14.13" width="504" /></a>We said goodbye to each other and took the Metro to our separate destinations. The evening brought more snow but unlike Nebraska it fell straight down – no winds to drift it into hard mounds but a deep blanket of it was laid over the city. The next morning (Sat.) everything was shut down in the city. All government offices, all museums, the Metro, Amtrak and all airports were closed and not running, stores and a lot of restaurants were closed too and the city didn’t want people out driving either. The snow was maybe about 8-10” deep at this point so after breakfast we bundled up to hike down to the Capitol and National Mall. What else was there to do?<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7yxO8jxXYV8/VrS5KQV7YbI/AAAAAAAAOm8/ZmnUmXTjk1k/s1600-h/2016-01-23-11.39%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-23-11.39" border="0" height="349" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-iq6rx2MCb9g/VrS5LgpB3JI/AAAAAAAAOnA/O3xEAiSA1lM/2016-01-23-11.39_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-23-11.39" width="504" /></a>We had such a good time and it really wasn’t so cold that we got chilled so we walked around for 2 hours or more both Saturday and Sunday. The streets were deserted so everyone was walking right down the middle of 4 and 6 lanes that are normally very busy streets next to all the government buildings. It was so quiet and so surreal feeling. There were lots of other people out walking and hauling sleds to the east side of the capitol where kids of all ages were having fun sledding down the hill. This was a once in a lifetime experience for us so we took advantage of it and got out of the hotel and saw DC at a standstill.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CpEWyf07KpU/VrS5NEJzO-I/AAAAAAAAOnE/7CMkOXVHNFA/s1600-h/2016-01-23-10.52%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-23-10.52" border="0" height="285" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9_Kk6KWXTvU/VrS5N4EO0gI/AAAAAAAAOnI/BazliqqYkcI/2016-01-23-10.52_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-23-10.52" width="503" /></a>I won’t bore you with a lot more photos of the snow storm in Washington DC but do want to show this last one. It was taken near where my niece lives and was taken on Monday after more snow fell on Saturday bringing the totals in DC to 18”-24”, mostly straight down so was rather deep to walk through where streets and walks were not cleaned. Some kind soul ran their snow blower down the middle of the street so people could have a clear place to walk if they wanted. <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z9crB6-UDH8/VrS5PUTUnmI/AAAAAAAAOnM/P5ZESUHyTVQ/s1600-h/2016-01-25-16.11%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-25-16.11" border="0" height="285" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sor120iAJ54/VrS5QM2_N-I/AAAAAAAAOnQ/c7a6FrohcMw/2016-01-25-16.11_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-25-16.11" width="503" /></a>Needless to say, but our conference was canceled and there was no way we could change our flights so were in DC for the originally planned duration. The Metro opened up partially on Monday so met my family members that came in for lunch at a great German restaurant a few blocks from Union Station then ventured out on the Metro to where they were all living or staying. We had a great time and so glad we are able to walk comfortably as that is what we did from the Metro station to the accommodations of my niece and brother, to the great Pizza restaurant then back to the Metro then back to the hotel once we got back to Union Station. Walk, walk, walk – if I lived here I would be in great shape for sure!<br />
<br />
The trip was not a total loss as we were able to see one senator to present our concerns on some farm related issues and saw staff of the other two. This was part of our assignment for the leadership conference and the appointments were already made so went ahead and kept them. Photo below is of Senator Deb Fischer and us at her office after our visit with her.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ICzYLifF3dI/VrS5RaRCfwI/AAAAAAAAOnU/CmYlgvv7A6k/s1600-h/2016-01-26-17.12%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-26-17.12" border="0" height="285" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EnjKUeA4gmA/VrS5SZgqrcI/AAAAAAAAOnY/xNZDAXFFWYE/2016-01-26-17.12_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-26-17.12" width="366" /></a>Since so many of the museums were closed we did more walking and looking at the buildings from the outside than inside. Did get a chance to visit 2 on Tuesday and one Wednesday morning before we had to get to the airport. That was disappointing as we had planned to visit more of the museums this trip but guess it will have to wait for another time.<br />
<br />
Felt good to get home after a week away and get back to normal around the farm. I have said it before I am sure; I love to visit cities and see areas away from here but I love getting back to the quiet of our rural home in Nebraska.<br />

It was fun to choose the fabrics for each person as I tried to pick fabrics that I thought they would like and fit their personalities. I loved them all - the bright and the pastel ones!<br />

It is always a worry that something will fall behind the furniture so I am always double checking that I have everything from the night before.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7T0gOYVMG9w/Vp-pyuJzlSI/AAAAAAAAOjA/UyEiR_fCZzk/s1600-h/2016-01-20-09.11.00%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-20-09.11.00" border="0" height="202" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PwOFdyZfxhw/Vp-pzSj7FqI/AAAAAAAAOjI/L6KHqkk3GfQ/2016-01-20-09.11.00_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-20-09.11.00" width="342" /></a>My sister Jeannine solved that problem by giving me this very practical and useful travel tray, plus it is pretty too. It is basically a quilted, rounded off square with Velcro in the corners to make it close up to make a shallow tray. When I am ready to head home I pull the Velcro apart on the corners to make it lie flat again and slip it into my suitcase. <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-F6FhKS7j5CM/Vp-p058YgYI/AAAAAAAAOjQ/r1FuLFoICoc/s1600-h/2016-01-20-09.09%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-20-09.09" border="0" height="289" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZeIODL0Hcvg/Vp-p2HXQAjI/AAAAAAAAOjY/XoHs7U0sNTg/2016-01-20-09.09_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-20-09.09" width="342" /></a>I decided to make these for my friends, daughters and granddaughters for Christmas. (when my grandson’s get older I will make them each one to pack but right now at ages 10 and 13 they are a bit young and wouldn’t know what to do with them.)<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7uj7E7Z824E/Vp-p65zrwwI/AAAAAAAAOjg/1TFAuHgZHFU/s1600-h/IMG_70483.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7048" border="0" height="426" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MlcuQYI-hcU/Vp-p8dTa_0I/AAAAAAAAOjo/jdmKDYwQ9tE/IMG_7048_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7048" width="454" /></a>I cut 2 squares at 9 1/2” and one piece of thinner batting about 10 1/2”square. I chose prints for the outside fabric and a lighter more solid fabric for the inside of the tray. Left over pieces of batting work great for this project.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FQVMuO1KEqM/Vp-p-E0XWvI/AAAAAAAAOjw/wd0NzRI1yYE/s1600-h/IMG_70502.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7050" border="0" height="229" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yrW7v0Y2brE/Vp-p-9wvX4I/AAAAAAAAOj0/6jUCniJNO-A/IMG_7050_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7050" width="342" /></a>Round off the corners for ease of construction. You can use a template, old CD or DVD or any other round object to trace around on the wrong side of the lighter fabric to round it off. Mark all 4 corners.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P8HGMN6G68U/Vp-qA0e9ojI/AAAAAAAAOkA/XisAFHgeoLQ/s1600-h/IMG_70512.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7051" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1vorELnocrk/Vp-qBtb1hSI/AAAAAAAAOkI/LvDmSStIQqE/IMG_7051_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7051" width="342" /></a>Layer the two pieces of fabric right sides together then place the fabric on the batting and pin to secure. As you can see the batting peeks out around the two fabrics. Easy to stitch so you don’t have to worry about it creeping away from the seam lines when stitching.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kwyuRtiZxmg/Vp-qDN1N27I/AAAAAAAAOkQ/lN0OLEdsFhY/s1600-h/IMG_70522.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7052" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-scso-hclZnU/Vp-qEmETHoI/AAAAAAAAOkY/54qEYhJAOVE/IMG_7052_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7052" width="342" /></a>Stitch 1/4” around the rounded square leaving an opening on one side. Back stitch at the beginning and the end. Trim the excess batting away from the seam line leaving just a bit caught in the stitching line. This will eliminate some of the bulk at the seams.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RzAU6U30YYc/Vp-qGZVMWTI/AAAAAAAAOkg/i6dYA0-DgEo/s1600-h/IMG_70532.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7053" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YdhYV3xBXDk/Vp-qHcicUlI/AAAAAAAAOko/FFIleGXrsI4/IMG_7053_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7053" width="342" /></a>Turn it right side out and use your finger or blunted object to push out the corners. Press flat keeping the seam line on the edge of the square. Turn under the fabric at the opening and press then pin the opening closed. Top stitch around the entire edge pretty close so it catches the area you left open for turning.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-efvQNNe_66Y/Vp-qJdM2EvI/AAAAAAAAOkw/bhAvwiqNKdg/s1600-h/IMG_70542.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7054" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xv4PvqlR17c/Vp-qKSJwTZI/AAAAAAAAOk4/7I642rUyfoc/IMG_7054_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7054" width="342" /></a>Mark a line 2” across each side with something that can be removed or not show after stitching. Stitch on those markings and also a diagonal line in to the 2” lines from each corner like the example below.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-usReU8u9xMM/Vp-qMDxgLqI/AAAAAAAAOlA/XU_qa-WrIOc/s1600-h/IMG_70552.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7055" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2kb-8dV8_a0/Vp-qM5Li1rI/AAAAAAAAOlI/HUqn44XGCUk/IMG_7055_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7055" width="342" /></a>At this point you don’t really have to do any more stitching if you don’t want to but I like to machine quilt the entire piece to make it more dense and a little stiffer. Cut Velcro pieces about 3/4” long and stitch the small pairs of Velcro to each corner. (Tip – make sure you have one loopy side and one hooky side for each corner!) <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Np7hevtd4Kc/Vp-qOdADr1I/AAAAAAAAOlQ/-ouf_NEb1nw/s1600-h/IMG_70562.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7056" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-M4n08-HqxcQ/Vp-qPKcVAMI/AAAAAAAAOlY/cIo8PkulOvk/IMG_7056_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7056" width="342" /></a>As you can see the outside (below) is a blue print and quite busy but the inside (above) is a light color so items placed in it will show up. A busy print for the inside would make it hard to see small items placed in the tray – keep inside light and more solid looking.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-39zDIkF85T8/Vp-qRSBOLmI/AAAAAAAAOlg/tfBnI43Jrj0/s1600-h/IMG_70572.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7057" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-15bfme3moJk/Vp-qSWgTpkI/AAAAAAAAOlo/dkrU8_gidbw/IMG_7057_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7057" width="342" /></a>This is what it looks like with the Velcro corners pinched together and with some jewelry inside.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6YZ8aOvhYLA/Vp-qTmkUtPI/AAAAAAAAOlw/_fxvxDk1cok/s1600-h/IMG_70592.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7059" border="0" height="326" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-loE5O8Bbuwg/Vp-qUZOH-yI/AAAAAAAAOl4/MzAoEOAcyy0/IMG_7059_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7059" width="342" /></a>These are very quick to make and wonderful gifts to give to friends and family.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oVNJDoTk1NQ/Vp-qVoPc5CI/AAAAAAAAOmA/cZ8Tmp5trqQ/s1600-h/IMG_70602.jpg"><img alt="IMG_7060" border="0" height="217" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1Mz4jFG6WWU/Vp-qWB_r5aI/AAAAAAAAOmI/BoBPSHr8NQE/IMG_7060_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_7060" width="342" /></a>Check the next post for more photos of all the finished travel trays I made for Christmas gifts. <br />

He excitedly told me he had seen a couple of bald eagles about a quarter of a mile from our house. I was rushing to get dressed to go see them when the phone rang again. (Have to admit I was still in my nightgown but had also put on a sweat shirt and sweat pants to pad around the house that morning.)<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vt0mX66HgFA/VplUPOMWVAI/AAAAAAAAOew/gE-B48JBm9w/s1600-h/IMG_6905%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6905" border="0" height="237" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yR9UMLCubC0/VplUP9ogqFI/AAAAAAAAOe4/DvTEY9_H30Q/IMG_6905_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6905" width="354" /></a>My neighbor asked if I was home and to go outside and look in the tree on the north side of the house as a bald eagle just landed in it. Grabbed my camera and went out the front door and sure enough there it was. (By the way I was dressed by this time.) This was a mature eagle and it sat there for quite sometime as I clicked away with my camera but eventually had enough of the paparazzi and flew away. I am thinking it was one of the two John saw earlier.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UZBWw8r9Iaw/VplUQ-nzNJI/AAAAAAAAOfA/_ZPK0u11SKA/s1600-h/IMG_6920%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6920" border="0" height="108" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9p9laYBXaBY/VplURtbZRAI/AAAAAAAAOfE/5Pxaepi2pBA/IMG_6920_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6920" width="504" /></a><br />
<div align="left">
Later that morning I had to run to town to get groceries and noticed two large shapes (eagles of course) across the road from our house in the field. They don’t look that big when you see them from farther away but they are huge birds. There was one adult and one juvenile, probably the same adult that was in our tree earlier and the pair John saw too. </div>
<div align="center">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6v0YORIz3tI/VplUTNgK-yI/AAAAAAAAOfQ/Q0x7TlYi0nQ/s1600-h/IMG_6923%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6923" border="0" height="244" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WlpovjTsV78/VplUT14la0I/AAAAAAAAOfU/QMLk71d0-cc/IMG_6923_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6923" width="244" /></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wjGydRPU31k/VplUVTnswKI/AAAAAAAAOfg/m1WsH2u1V0c/s1600-h/IMG_6924%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6924" border="0" height="244" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3iCLgXyTWqU/VplUWR1UDNI/AAAAAAAAOfk/2Ck9AMg62Eg/IMG_6924_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6924" width="244" /></a></div>
<div align="left">
Here are some zoomed and cropped photos of those two birds. I think there were several more bald eagles in the area that day too as John said they spotted several more that morning. The migrating geese were flying overhead quite a bit that day and we do know they follow them at least partway to their winter quarter and pick off the weak and dying. Whenever the geese migrate we are more apt to see more bald eagles then too. The next day we didn’t see any or few geese and no bald eagles either. </div>
<div align="left">
<br /></div>
<div align="left">
We do have one or two resident bald eagles in the area all winter long though. I see one almost every time I cross our river sitting on a dead tree that has partially fallen into the water. No matter how often we see them them it is still a thrill.</div>

We enjoy going and to show our pride we wear our school colors as much as we can. (I can say our because we both graduated from the University of Nebraska, although it was many years ago.)<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YG1dPfhqeXI/VpMe5b07vlI/AAAAAAAAObo/9vRk6Zv_AQM/s1600-h/2015-12-06-13.52.2831.jpg"><img alt="2015-12-06 13.52.28" border="0" height="454" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Q7kY0c0eVLI/VpMfAFu6OxI/AAAAAAAAObw/MW0GGYwcXRw/2015-12-06-13.52.28_thumb23.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2015-12-06 13.52.28" width="342" /></a>I decided since we were going to so many games I needed to make a purse/bag to go with my Husker red clothes. By the way UNL’s mascot is the Cornhuskers…shortened to Huskers. I used the <a href="http://store.pinksandbeachdesigns.com/120-barbados.html">Barbados Bag pattern designed by Nancy Green from Pink Sand Beach Designs</a> for the basic pattern. <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9hHX2-E-gw4/VpMfBagjNZI/AAAAAAAAOb4/lRJzyK_sTmU/s1600-h/yhst-128744317015268_2266_3616581%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="yhst-128744317015268_2266_3616581" border="0" height="454" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-omSxyKKBNqM/VpMfCf4XWNI/AAAAAAAAOcA/kWGrz6S_sQc/yhst-128744317015268_2266_3616581_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="yhst-128744317015268_2266_3616581" width="295" /></a> This is both sides of the outside of the bag. I used two red/black/white prints plus some of the black leather from one of the thrift store leather coats I took apart for the bottom. <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dWdoO93Q_J0/VpMfDwDZuVI/AAAAAAAAOcI/CyRX2vkT0_Q/s1600-h/IMG_68845.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6884" border="0" height="233" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IJZaOG0_VOA/VpMfExlqFHI/AAAAAAAAOcQ/170xZrJf1-w/IMG_6884_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6884" width="454" /></a>It is hard to tell where the pockets are located so these photos below show a white card placed in the pockets. I like lots of pockets in my bags so if a pattern doesn’t have what I want I add them.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--OSAztrRZ4k/VpMfGAajoqI/AAAAAAAAOcY/abN-A2tjb18/s1600-h/IMG_68862.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6886" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Gz-mOAAysHE/VpMfHIi1tjI/AAAAAAAAOcg/q7f16OmQiPA/IMG_6886_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6886" width="342" /></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0Ta0Y0bDoTM/VpMfIjqxrYI/AAAAAAAAOco/uwqqn4dlSiQ/s1600-h/IMG_68872.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6887" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-j1obGqBZHhg/VpMfJ1bmyMI/AAAAAAAAOcw/z-K08A4F2EY/IMG_6887_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6887" width="342" /></a>I used a white fabric with small black printed design for the lining of my bag. I always choose a light colored lining as I made the mistake of making one bag with a black lining and I never can see anything inside! I always put one zippered pocket and patch pockets on the opposite side of the lining in most bags I make. There is a bit of a change to one of the patch pockets though. Scroll down to look at the detail photo. <br />
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RefhRLDKC08/VpMfLykMufI/AAAAAAAAOc4/OiOW478vLgM/s1600-h/IMG_68883.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6888" border="0" height="270" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y901F1QcyoQ/VpMfNKjHdUI/AAAAAAAAOdA/Fmf1vxnvq78/IMG_6888_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6888" width="454" /></a>I do want to point out the that the bottom is left open on one half of the patch pocket. My sister showed me this trick a few years ago. The reason is that you can stand your wallet or checkbook up and it will peek out the top for easy retrieval and the bottom will rest on the bottom of the bag. Keeps the pocket from tipping forward when something heavier is placed inside. <a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-npNDTb4QZrU/VpMfO1USatI/AAAAAAAAOdI/oPVdoB0HbOw/s1600-h/IMG_68902.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6890" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UajvP8brAbQ/VpMfPlq-kgI/AAAAAAAAOdQ/TK1bhwSFejU/IMG_6890_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6890" width="342" /></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ov29tgAGCSA/VpMfSNZqnCI/AAAAAAAAOdY/a9xL-OAj-1k/s1600-h/IMG_68912.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6891" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QsEQRH3DNTs/VpMfTQCqJoI/AAAAAAAAOdg/utDSOYjEy_w/IMG_6891_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6891" width="342" /></a>All finished! I love it and have carried it quite a few times already. You can see front and back views below.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5e5Ikj1Hddg/VpMfU5stWDI/AAAAAAAAOdo/R1i1o_mlLqU/s1600-h/combo%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="combo" border="0" height="454" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KsFNyzg9oLM/VpMfVl5j9xI/AAAAAAAAOdw/VbHYI9nZQ1Q/combo_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="combo" width="336" /></a>As a final touch I make zipper pulls for ease of opening and closing. For this bag I have one special one I originally purchased as a piece of jewelry but added a lobster clip and Ta-Da a fantastic zipper pull.. In case you can't read it, it says “once a Husker, always a Husker”.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A3qwXoYaMUA/VpMfXKkYcyI/AAAAAAAAOd4/6kBkNeLWqWU/s1600-h/IMG_6900%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_6900" border="0" height="454" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A0ItkZOdkIw/VpMfYGTEhnI/AAAAAAAAOeA/RxpKD8T1GSc/IMG_6900_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_6900" width="304" /></a>Also dressed up the bag with a bit more bling. This was also part of a necklace but I did find that it was a bit heavy to wear as a necklace but is perfect hanging on to the base of my bag strap. It could be a great key ring as well.<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ISKyWNt_6pw/VpMfacBNk8I/AAAAAAAAOeI/I7CywSALhuc/s1600-h/2016-01-10-19.44.37%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2016-01-10-19.44.37" border="0" height="292" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8Iftjz898Us/VpMfbDQXjqI/AAAAAAAAOeQ/LWge9EnVQFk/2016-01-10-19.44.37_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2016-01-10-19.44.37" width="342" /></a>I love the size of the bag, love the fabrics plus the leather on the bottom as it helps to keep it clean at the ball games, and love the subtle tribute (red and white colors) to my beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers.<br />

It is hard to believe it is 2016 already as I finally got used to writing 2015.<br />
<br />
Like the title says ready, set go! This isn’t a news year’s resolution as such but more as the start of a new year and a challenge to myself to hopefully write more posts. It is all habit and I have just gotten out of the habit of writing for my blog and I intend to do better. As a start I plan to post as often as I can and to not make myself write long posts but short, hopefully interesting posts to get me started.<br />
<br />
We had a lovely Christmas with our family and a fun tradition we have with the grandchildren is to have a scavenger hunt and games or search for items around the house to get their gifts. Now that they are a bit older we tried a couple new things that they had fun doing. First one they had to do to get a gift was to make up their mothers as Santa. They worked on their aunt rather than their own mother and used toilet paper and scotch tape. Think they did a pretty good job, don’t you think? It really got silly and they had fun making the two different kinds of beards and topping them off with the two Santa hats. <br />
<div align="center">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yyU_AhU8aj4/VpBg3L4wneI/AAAAAAAAOa4/wi3L6eeqcmk/s1600-h/IMG959642%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG959642" border="0" height="342" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xy5Gh29i-wM/VpBg4T2SAiI/AAAAAAAAObA/1vNQQoP90ws/IMG959642_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG959642" width="454" /></a> </div>
<div align="left">
Another fun activity they did used a paper plate and different colored crayons. They had to put the paper plate on their head and draw what I told them to, not seeing what they were drawing of course. I had them use a green crayon to draw a tree, a brown crayon for the trunk, yellow crayon for a star on top and red for ornaments on the branches. To make it more fun for the kids the adults did it too. They all had a giggle over their creations and to be honest they were pretty good pieces of art. Every year I ask them if they are tired of doing all the things we have then do to get their gifts and the unanimous vote is to keep doing it so we do. It does take a bit of time to come up with all the clues for the scavenger hunt for all four of them but John and I enjoy trying to make the clues more obscure the older the child. The 15 yr. old had to really do some thinking to figure out some of her clues. The rule is if you find all your clues you have to help the ones not done. We send them upstairs, downstairs, and in the garage to find the clues. </div>
<div align="left">
<br /></div>
<div align="left">
The kids and adults played board games the 2 days they were here and everyone had fun from the 10 year old to John and I the oldies in the group. We all had lots of laughs at John playing Pictionary as he can not draw well at all and our guesses of what he drew were even funnier. It is nice to spend time together and enjoy each other’s company.</div>

This one was made from a striped snowman fabric and I will use it on my table at Christmas and the rest of the winter. As I said before, this is a very simple pattern to make and can be whipped up in just a few hours.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EreciHnIhvE/Vk03sHssKiI/AAAAAAAAOYE/kKed1Q9jiss/s1600-h/Triangle-Frenzy-Swirl-sewing-pattern-Bunny-Cleland-front%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="Triangle-Frenzy-Swirl-sewing-pattern-Bunny-Cleland-front" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-smLwTDNvLdc/Vk03tYX47vI/AAAAAAAAOYI/nWEt7U4msQo/Triangle-Frenzy-Swirl-sewing-pattern-Bunny-Cleland-front_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Triangle-Frenzy-Swirl-sewing-pattern-Bunny-Cleland-front" width="284" /></a><br />
The pieces are cut with a 60 degree triangle and you use striped fabric or could use fabric that is seamed together to make stripes. I used a Creative Grids ruler I already had but a blunted top tip of a 60 degree ruler is really helpful for making this table runner. <br />
<br />
I have several striped fabrics on hand so may whip more of these up when I have a few extra minutes.<br />

We don’t get any trick or treaters here but I like to decorate my house with a few Halloween items anyway.<br />
<br />
I have several Halloween wall hangings I put out each year and just finished a table runner. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Tf55t-Lw7Lc/VjTTE7vSlYI/AAAAAAAAOO0/aDpw0oWRKAo/s1600-h/2015-10-26%25252008.39.06%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2015-10-26 08.39.06" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AjmaigOYEic/VjTTF8diVpI/AAAAAAAAOO8/ofx8Hm-D-G0/2015-10-26%25252008.39.06_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="340" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2015-10-26 08.39.06" width="452" /></a>Will talk about this more later but it was easy and used striped fabric, a 60 degree ruler and the pattern Triangle Frenzy Swirl by Bunnie Cleland.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vy7lmx8vcuE/VjTTHJLCGtI/AAAAAAAAOPE/mC0EuRvJR2k/s1600-h/2015-10-31%25252009.13.06%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2015-10-31 09.13.06" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY8UGwsOKY6KtToDWY6lpWhQEA3HvObJRXXIhg8PETHyLznA0L4zTMFcy2IQUls7Ngr8Ko4ajO_hiKXVDk8wwlvQs44Wmo434FT_ZDABXZJcPjpPcX7uhBxZ1ftZF8UR0FK5MF1SpSb50/?imgmax=800" height="391" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2015-10-31 09.13.06" width="392" /></a>This is my oldest Halloween wall hanging that I made in 1990. I remember I had to use a poly/cotton orange fabric because at that time I could not find any bright orange 100% cotton. It is about 32” square.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0bHjxa8E624/VjTTJmwOGBI/AAAAAAAAOPU/n06A4FxW2LQ/s1600-h/2015-10-31%25252009.13.58%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2015-10-31 09.13.58" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TbybTM8hVkg/VjTTKuJbZuI/AAAAAAAAOPc/bvKTPtZuOCE/2015-10-31%25252009.13.58_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="323" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2015-10-31 09.13.58" width="269" /></a>This 17” x 20” pattern is from the Which Witch & The Who by Leslie Beck for Fiber Mosaaics. It is fused with a pieced border that I bought as a kit from a fabric store and finished in 1995.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gEjk0r1bImM/VjTTMZ7XO5I/AAAAAAAAOPk/MyWCjBVEJto/s1600-h/IMG_3247-2%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_3247-2" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QLQULICH7T0/VjTTNaImuEI/AAAAAAAAOPs/PUp3Ghf3qco/IMG_3247-2_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="340" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_3247-2" width="348" /></a> I finished this wall hanging in 2008 after it sat unfinished for several years. The center design is by Rebecca Carter in the book Two-Hour Mini Quilt Projects but I needle turned the applique instead of fusing it. I pieced the points and the background as an example in a class I taught on piecing Mariner’s Compass blocks and didn’t finish it until much later. Here is a detail of it below and you can read about it starting with this blog on <a href="http://nebraskaviews.blogspot.com/2008/08/sewing-room-and-finishing-those.html" target="_blank">August 28, 2008</a>. I usually leave it up all fall as it doesn’t scream Halloween.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wJUbfTCGbKo/VjTTPXYSyzI/AAAAAAAAOP0/ei-L4Oylo_M/s1600-h/IMG_3248-2%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_3248-2" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8R-Rc4798-c/VjTTQF5TRpI/AAAAAAAAOP8/rGEjOP2ASKc/IMG_3248-2_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="340" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_3248-2" width="342" /></a>This is a close up of the corner quilting motif. Maybe in a few years I will be inspired to make something else new for Halloween.<br />

The Professional Tote is like the papa bear to the mam bear Mini Professional Tote. I liked the size she made so decided to just make my bag bigger by 2” each direction. Sounded like a good plan but wow there were a lot of pieces to adjust. I had to double check my figures on all the pieces and luckily I didn’t cut anything wrong.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Z5ysAAMxdVw/VihFOzaakuI/AAAAAAAAOMo/l-KsDxbpv5w/s1600-h/IMG_5547%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5547" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DgD8ZF2882g/VihFPvUEC5I/AAAAAAAAOMw/fYYzTVd1Th0/IMG_5547_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="268" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5547" width="454" /></a>Here are the front and back sections all finished. I used black leather from one of the coats I purchased from Goodwill for the bottom and straps. I figured that the leather would be easier to clean and be better for when I used the bag for travel. Easy to wipe off and clean. The main fabric is a denim but happens to have some stretch to it. I liked the pattern and think it should not make any difference in how the bag holds up and wears.<br />
<br />
<br />
Back to the coat....It dawned on me about a year ago that if I purchased inexpensive leather coats at thrift stores I could disassemble them and use the leather in a variety of ways so now every time I make a trip to our two larger towns about 1 and 1 1/2 hours away I check out the thrift stores for any new leather coats. I make sure they are pure leather and not the look alike vinyl. I also check to see if there are areas of the coat that have larger pieces. Leather coats tend to be made of small pieces seamed together so I like to find men's coats that have larger areas of leather pieces. <br />

I added the pink fabric to encase the elastic at the top of the pockets.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0K1yWlNM4Z4/VihFUcvzjCI/AAAAAAAAONI/qkXQM58fumQ/s1600-h/IMG_5555%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5555" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pKHbWxMDvLs/VihFVTBu6QI/AAAAAAAAONQ/7QV0pH7ASak/IMG_5555_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5555" width="324" /></a>All finished front with a pocket in the front between the straps.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ybK9CeQlBcI/VihFWjoihEI/AAAAAAAAONY/ksqbxS2h0hw/s1600-h/IMG_5556%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5556" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Zp13d8Csz9w/VihFXhLnxaI/AAAAAAAAONg/LadImL-HOaE/IMG_5556_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5556" width="322" /></a>Back of bag – a large pocket across the width of the bag with the straps stitched just to that layer. Above it a zippered pocket.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-I_r4_32cBGw/VihFZKNbSdI/AAAAAAAAONo/9kuXlK-WeGI/s1600-h/ends%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="ends" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DyP9p-y8fL8/VihFaF1lNHI/AAAAAAAAONw/bZWbUg-ybcE/ends_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="ends" width="380" /></a>The ends of the bag all finished. I did make the mesh pocket the size to fit a water bottle. I pinned the bag pocket and tested the size before I stitched it. Both pockets have a pleat stitched in to make it fit the width of the bag. That width was taken up with elastic on the top.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fRU8lDufh2U/VihFcKv78nI/AAAAAAAAON4/FzO_nofpcrs/s1600-h/IMG_5559%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5559" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lIrbok3dZbU/VihFdEyr_-I/AAAAAAAAOOA/Jpk4bWjPVEg/IMG_5559_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="357" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5559" width="454" /></a>Taking photos of the insides of bags is always a challenge but I forged ahead. The bright pink rectangle is actually a zippered, padded pocket made to hold a tablet, kindle or other item that needs a little more protection. It is stitched into the center of the bag so both sides of it could be packed with clothes if traveling or papers and other items if carrying it for work. As you can see there is a zippered pocket against the outside wall of the bag.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0SJyhmjQIW0/VihFfJzt6tI/AAAAAAAAOOI/iW9FSZAC8yY/s1600-h/IMG_5560%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5560" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eW5423fGlMk/VihFgMcgnSI/AAAAAAAAOOQ/bZgOtxoLEiE/IMG_5560_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="427" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5560" width="454" /></a>Now here is a look at the other side of the inside of the tote. This side has a pink patchwork pocket to fit a cell phone and an elasticized pocket with a tab closer to hold other items.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rNmtYn6uX-Y/VihFiViFEhI/AAAAAAAAOOY/KD8EfaZliJk/s1600-h/IMG_5561%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5561" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-V5m35euxe8c/VihFjY7ZTMI/AAAAAAAAOOg/iWjOHEjXfbQ/IMG_5561_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="345" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5561" width="454" /></a><br />
Last photo is of the tote with the top zipper all zipped up. I do like this bag but have to admit that it is a little heavy unloaded so might just be a bit too heavy to carry if it is packed with all my goodies. That is probably because of my choice of fabrics. The leather and the denim are more dense and heavier fabrics so make the bag heavier too, oh well can't do anything about it now.<br />
<br />
I have yet to carry the bag but did enjoy finishing it up. Not sure I will ever try to enlarge a bag with as many pieces ever again as it was a real challenge and worry if it would all fit together in the end.<br />
<br />
Until Later,<br />

I entered 4 small quilts and was very pleased to receive 4 ribbons. Please ignore the wind blown hair but John took these photos after a long hot windy day of visiting the fair. I really don’t like to see photos of myself as I see myself differently than the camera does! Oh well I am what I am.<br />

This quilt received a first place ribbon for small pieced quilt a thrill for any ribbon and a first place, even more thrilling. I blogged about it <a href="http://nebraskaviews.blogspot.com/2015/03/spectruma-miniature-lone-star-quilt_6.html">here</a> and <a href="http://nebraskaviews.blogspot.com/2015/03/spectruma-miniature-lone-star-quilt_6.html">here</a>.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QR8so2GkisE/VhiDg3kBE4I/AAAAAAAAOJI/phz996qG2sc/s1600-h/IMG_3675%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_3675" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0yxpCloAoSM/VhiDiuLoJnI/AAAAAAAAOJQ/-9ar5USQ9MA/IMG_3675_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="450" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_3675" width="454" /></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-64BcGN3Ow9Y/VhiDlz0jTiI/AAAAAAAAOJY/dQa2QaCfRw8/s1600-h/IMG_3701%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_3701" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qfDj9hd-gDI/VhiDnYgE4BI/AAAAAAAAOJg/MSnakPDQaVw/IMG_3701_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="254" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_3701" width="254" /></a>This quilt got a second place ribbon in the group quilt category. This was a group quilt challenge pieced by 3 friends and me and quilted by me. It did look strange at the fair though as they hung it a quarter turn around, besides the fact that I had a sleeve at the top. You can read about making it <a href="http://nebraskaviews.blogspot.com/2015/07/nebraska-state-quilt-guild-2015.html">here</a> and <a href="http://nebraskaviews.blogspot.com/2015/07/nebraska-state-quilt-guild-2015_17.html">here</a>.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XCIRtVMOdSk/VhiDqazn5eI/AAAAAAAAOJo/VcW4YlYz9OA/s1600-h/IMG_4856%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4856" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PfNBnyDRNco/VhiDsMG1TqI/AAAAAAAAOJw/SJZrkS-N20s/IMG_4856_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="401" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4856" width="454" /></a>This quilt received a 4th place ribbon at the state fair. This is the family tree quilt I made for my mother about her family. I was so very excited to win the best machine quilting award with a domestic machine. This was something I had been trying to win for many years so it really means a lot to me. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GRn-vNg3B0M/VhiDz121G4I/AAAAAAAAOKI/QD1olt6I2HY/s1600-h/IMG_5462%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5462" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nNkX3vRhoio/VhiD1k0b1JI/AAAAAAAAOKQ/ajt41VoOhc8/IMG_5462_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5462" width="454" /></a><br />

That is a lot of time and talent from man,y many quilters. It was so much fun to walk the isles admiring all the different sizes, techniques, and colors of these pieces of art. Each year the quilters in the state step up and enter their precious quilts. I appreciate all the ribbons I got this year and in past years as I know every quilter entered their best and hoping to win a ribbon.<br />

I did some mowing late afternoon and noticed many Monarch butterflies as I mowed and was fascinated just watching them flit from one place to another but a lot were landing and sitting along the edges of a mud puddle out by our barn. I presume they were stopping to get a drink. As it was nearing sunset my husband, John and I started walking around looking for where they were going to rest for the night and discovered several places on the west side of the cedar trees west of our house. I have never, ever seen this many Monarch butterflies before and it is magnificent to see so many of the beautiful insects clustered on the cedar trees. John was lucky to see a display like this a few years ago down at one of our pastures. He said the trees were just alive with the thousands of butterflies. Not sure how many are here but I would guess 100s and maybe even up to 1000 and they were still arriving when I finally went into the house at 7 pm. I went out again this morning and got more photos and at 7 am they were mostly all hanging upside down with their wings closed. If I wouldn’t have know they were butterflies at first glance they looked like dead leaves just hanging on the branches which is probably how they avoid getting eaten by the birds.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9s0dJBQRBOY/Vggu9jBDDfI/AAAAAAAAOHU/2soS8Uz03FQ/s1600-h/v2-61722.jpg"><img alt="v2-6172" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CXR2m7u9TKE/Vggu-toNCGI/AAAAAAAAOHc/NitSzpHWCJc/v2-6172_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="v2-6172" width="454" /></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SR5J02fdUEs/VggvAMjjfdI/AAAAAAAAOHk/BAJYfnisBsk/s1600-h/v2-61552.jpg"><img alt="v2-6155" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-REK8VHQsfL0/VggvA-1jxQI/AAAAAAAAOHs/8SCMAyJLHvg/v2-6155_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="v2-6155" width="454" /></a>None of the bunches of butterflies were hanging low so used my zoom lens to try and get close up shots of them. It is hard to imagine the delicate looking butterflies flying that far. Here are a couple of websites that tell about the migration.<br />

This is an experience I will never forget and the photos I have posted just don’t give the total feeling of awe I felt watching them. <br />

You can see from the photo and the bobbin sitting on the quilt the size of motifs I worked with on this quilt. Read on for more and to see the finished quilt in it’s entirety. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aZWIGG3p9AE/VgGN-E4YqLI/AAAAAAAAOEI/903wbjbMJiM/s1600-h/IMG_5015%25255B2%25255D.jpg"> <img alt="IMG_5015" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XBJa6Bb5j5w/VgGN_fyQpdI/AAAAAAAAOEQ/_iJYI8ceze8/IMG_5015_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5015" width="454" /></a>Time to make another whole cloth silk miniature and here is how I start. I love to draw my designs by hand but this time I used my recently purchased <a href="http://www.cindyneedham.com/ultimate_stencil.html" target="_blank">The Ultimate Stencil by Cindy Needham</a> to shorten the design time. I purchased the set of stencils and downloaded the free paper master grid originals and made copies to help draw the designs for this quilt. Cindy offers the free downloads to anyone so check it out. With a little math and geometry anyone can draw the designs but I found this to be a real time savor for me since all I had to do was print the grids out and start sketching. I do plan to use the grid stencils to help plan and draw quilting lines in the future.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XEb1vDAPEX8/VgGOAhSX2nI/AAAAAAAAOEY/LU8VAIu-LeI/s1600-h/IMG_5132%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5132" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2thdWveOvBs/VgGOBajijOI/AAAAAAAAOEc/8CRkYAviux0/IMG_5132_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5132" width="454" /></a>After many revisions, tweaks and corrections my design is ready to trace onto the silk. I take my sewing machine out of my sewing table, lay a piece of Plexiglas over the opening and slide a flat bar light onto the shelf that holds my machine and turn it on. I tape the design over the Plexiglas as I will have to move both it and the fabric that is taped over it to be able to see the entire design for tracing. This makes such an easy and cheap light box so give it a try. If you don’t have a large piece of Plexiglas you can always take out one of the storm door windows from a outside door, clean it up and lay it over an opening. I will caution you though if you do this that the glass can break and it will break into a million pieces. You might ask how I know but as you can guess I have had the lovely experience so please get the Plexiglass or some stiff plastic if you can. You might look for a poster frame in a hobby store as a source of Plexiglass/plastic as they use it to cover the poster.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-V-7tyI3KkKs/VgGOCvGZpxI/AAAAAAAAOEo/MAWrTYM41KE/s1600-h/IMG_5134%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5134" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Yor0niKZpg8/VgGODKNGAbI/AAAAAAAAOEs/j-KBNgC-388/IMG_5134_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5134" width="454" /></a>As you can see my silk is brown and you can see the design lines through it very well. I use a white chalk pencil to trace the lines, turning off the light every once in a while to check for missing lines.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1tYrEcV7XjM/VgGOFZOJkcI/AAAAAAAAOE4/1YRi70vg504/s1600-h/IMG_5136%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5136" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sfF-louLjok/VgGOGHPpKUI/AAAAAAAAOE8/NeTPrJjLlD4/IMG_5136_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5136" width="454" /></a>After the design is all traced I layered it with the wool batting and silk fabric backing and pin it together with straight pins. A new way I am basting the quilt and have found works very well is using <a href="http://www.superiorthreads.com/product/Brand/vanish-extra/?gclid=CjwKEAjw-IOwBRD1wrTC27fSjFISJABUDZ17sVgn7j4EPdqdXzBrUjP7oyP7N2eq3183XYQWkYKmVBoCYmTw_wcB" target="_blank">Vanish Lite thread from Superior Threads</a>. It is a water soluble thread so I use it in the top and bobbin for my basting. <br />
<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9wFFhLe_ey4/VgGOHzLGPII/AAAAAAAAOFI/RNxKnRB1EvE/s1600-h/IMG_5144%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5144" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FqzyvFoaCw4/VgGOIwa_yuI/AAAAAAAAOFM/T-BneA19jLI/IMG_5144_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5144" width="454" /></a><br />
<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-LfgT90hYB-k/VgGOKbrqWqI/AAAAAAAAOFY/iGTN7LxZCMw/s1600-h/IMG_5146%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5146" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-78Jm5yaIGJ0/VgGOLCjqnNI/AAAAAAAAOFc/fhk7SftidzU/IMG_5146_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="340" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5146" width="408" /></a>I basted a grid, starting in the middle going each way so as not to stretch the top or backing. I did use the walking foot to do this basting. As you can see, for this small 13x13” square my basting lines are no wider than 1 1/2” apart one way and a bit farther the other. After quilting the vertical lines first I decided it didn’t need so many going the other direction. This held everything together so well and I could snip the thread if it was in the way or leave it to be rinsed out later since it dissolves in water. I think this will be my preferred method of basting from now on.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xC0CyqCCRpo/VgGONc4iQfI/AAAAAAAAOFo/sb-7yeBzbnY/s1600-h/IMG_5158%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5158" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vWBvgoJSNt4/VgGOOKVpB_I/AAAAAAAAOFw/Su0TTv_kidc/IMG_5158_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5158" width="454" /></a>I used 50 wt. silk thread to machine quilt the design areas first. As you can see I snipped out the basting lines in the middle but not in other areas. It just depended if the basting thread was in the way so I couldn’t see my lines. One change I did make on my design was to change the thistle blossom. My original design had several rows of zig-zag lines of quilting curved over the top to form the flower. I stitched one first on a practice sandwich and found I could not stitch that small of zig-zag so changed the flower to radiating lines.<br />
<br />
The two photos below show the same area of the quilt with my first attempt at doing some background quilting with black thread and the second one with the dark green background thread. If you look closely at the one with the black thread I crossed over lines and kind of had a mish-mash of lines. Why you ask, well the problem was that after I stitched a line with the black thread I could no longer see it well and therefor crossed over my lines. I was using the magnifying lens attached to my machine and very bright lights from all angles but just couldn’t see it very well. After spending parts of 2 days ripping out the 100 wt. black thread I changed to the dark green thread and got along fine. I kept the thread dark so it would recede into the background but light enough for me to see when I was stitching. In real life it isn’t quite a bright as it shows up in the photo though.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Faz6jKQ430k/VgGOQzG9npI/AAAAAAAAOF4/H9DtopEo6JY/s1600-h/IMG_5170%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5170" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MFeu0Rw-08w/VgGORvUG40I/AAAAAAAAOF8/UksqVXcNSeU/IMG_5170_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="340" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5170" width="340" /></a><br />

My plan was to make one for the auction for the family reunion we have of my mother’s family every two years - this was the summer for that reunion. She was one of 6 siblings and the second child. Her oldest sister has passed away and my mother is 94 and was unable to attend the reunion this year due to health concerns so I decided I would make one wall hanging for the reunion and one for her. By the way her other siblings are 92, 91, 89, and 80 and were all able to make it to the reunion plus lots of my cousins. My mother comes from a long lived family as her parents lived to 90 and 95 years.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-s-CjUmZXrOY/VfTo9g7xJJI/AAAAAAAAN90/kQZIoO6xcNI/s1600-h/IMG_48742.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4874" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1eDGFX5vZd0/VfTo-KoWw8I/AAAAAAAAN98/cP6kuMsKe-U/IMG_4874_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4874" width="454" /></a>Here is my design reversed as I planned to fuse the tree and we all know that the pattern will be flipped after fusing. Each branch represented one of my mother’s siblings and the smaller branches represent their children and the leaves represent their grandchildren. I decided to stop there as I wasn’t sure how many of the next generation there were and would have hated to miss someone. Funny thing about the tree design is that I drew and refined my design and was about to trace it on the fusible when I looked at it carefully and I only had 5 major branches instead of 6 so had to redraw it with the correct number.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QMaLdb0SCnA/VfTo_j_NAKI/AAAAAAAAN-E/Tcnlwhsvf4s/s1600-h/IMG_4877%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4877" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-pkILz2zwiG0/VfTpATP1BrI/AAAAAAAAN-M/h4wAs-ZdpiM/IMG_4877_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4877" width="454" /></a>This is a strange looking photo of the two trees but I have this great piece of batik that is variegated blue and light brown and I wanted to have the top of the trees covering a blue area and the base on the brown. I moved them around until I found an area I liked and then cut the background squares from my perfect spots. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XzCiY5-1bKs/VfTpCEQKMyI/AAAAAAAAN-U/DYKlXHBONp8/s1600-h/IMG_4879%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4879" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xB0mPHDdIe4/VfTpCzvzdrI/AAAAAAAAN-c/z68bh722cW4/IMG_4879_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4879" width="454" /></a>Here is the pallet of the batik fabrics I pulled to use in these quilts. You can see the background fabric behind all the colors and the brown fabric in front that will be the trunk. The rest were all used for leaves. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xlNT89YZ-nQ/VfTpEp849pI/AAAAAAAAN-k/8bmdaGVGvss/s1600-h/IMG_4881%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4881" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K7f9t4EQ_JY/VfTpFU02F7I/AAAAAAAAN-s/h41Q5fLPNeA/IMG_4881_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4881" width="454" /></a>Here the trunks are cut out and all the leaves. Since they were so small I positioned the trunk and fused it then used tweezers to place the leaves. I had to refer to my pattern to make sure I had the correct number of leaves on each small branch before I touched the iron to them. I did check several times to make sure I was correct before fusing. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZBoCTJBvI70/VfTpG8mz41I/AAAAAAAAN-0/G_nc8A4XuMk/s1600-h/IMG_4889%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4889" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FAI6qhSQGLY/VfTpHrk2H6I/AAAAAAAAN-8/P5vlucHIzWE/IMG_4889_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="250" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4889" width="454" /></a>All fused and bordered, ready to quilt. I used small sections of all the leaf colors for the one narrow boarder and I like how it brings all the colors out one more time. You really can’t tell but the brown border has some reds, golds and blues in it so was a perfect choice for this quilt.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_27po21r5wM/VfTpJS6UStI/AAAAAAAAN_E/EenY4eCGKr4/s1600-h/IMG_4917%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4917" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0v9PnNl8VeI/VfTpKF0rM-I/AAAAAAAAN_M/UwOFmBdSDNs/IMG_4917_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4917" width="454" /></a>I machine quilted a wavy design as the base of the design then I quilted more lines in each of those sections. The close up photos really show the bobbles and inconsistencies but like the old saying goes I don't think you can see it on a galloping horse!<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vwLJPqzxkfU/VfTpL9soQJI/AAAAAAAAN_U/mOmjR-VSH5s/s1600-h/IMG_4976%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4976" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PxOWQkjfYCw/VfTpMu32BgI/AAAAAAAAN_c/AUPilxtrMcc/IMG_4976_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4976" width="454" /></a>My mother’s maiden name was Burbank so quilted that into the area below the base of the tree<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BVadErUreJQ/VfTpOiK-tMI/AAAAAAAAN_k/H230Q9lbnLw/s1600-h/IMG_4974%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4974" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ERPDGig-PrM/VfTpPboCfpI/AAAAAAAAN_s/1BAlgBlHAiI/IMG_4974_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4974" width="454" /></a>Curlicues quilted in the sky and outline the leaves. I did quilt some texture to the trunk of the tree too. Have any of you noticed the birds? There is no reason they are there but to fill in and add to the design. The branches with no leaves mean that person didn’t have any children.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-yFy2VqOZ5Lo/VfTpRQHNbAI/AAAAAAAAN_0/IGa3Fa7AtlQ/s1600-h/IMG_4975%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4975" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2ycnjj5iVhQ/VfTpSEEfN4I/AAAAAAAAN_8/_HQDEv6KBKA/IMG_4975_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4975" width="454" /></a><br />

I put the sibling names on the branches and my grandparents names but didn’t add the rest of the names. The tree reads from left to right from oldest to youngest so I am the second branch up on the left side of the Leta branch. I used Bubble Jet Set to make the ink be permanent on the fabric before printing it. After scanning the tree drawing I typed in the information then printed it on the treated fabric that is ironed to a piece of freezer paper. I do most of my quilt labels this way and can add photos or drawings and can type out my words and know how everything will look on the finished label. With hand written labels I have misspelled words as I am carefully drawing out the letters so this solves that problem.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-F81TmiWlZIo/VfTpb68jxII/AAAAAAAAOA0/d3KfqVlvfCo/s1600-h/IMG_5588%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5588" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tkNODBr1uxA/VfTpcxZD1tI/AAAAAAAAOA8/FM6DtGI3hqQ/IMG_5588_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5588" width="454" /></a></div>

This is just a photo of one but believe me I got them both done and they look like a pair of twins. One of my aunts won the bid to take the other one home to Iowa from the reunion but my mother can enjoy seeing hers too. She was surprised when I gave it to her as she knew I was making one for the reunion auction but not the second one for her. I got to her before the reunion in western Nebraska at Fort Robinson as her siblings all stopped to see and visit with her before and right after the reunion so she didn’t feel like she missed seeing them and she could show off her quilt too. <br />

However, we did get some rain this week so our irrigating is done for this year. Up until the latest rain we were watering the soybean fields one more time. Before we know it we will be in the midst of harvest.<br />

Yes, it is a large, and I do mean large praying mantis. He says they don’t bite but you wouldn’t catch me getting one to crawl up on my hand. You can see by the size compared to his hand how big it was – probably around 5” long. We see smaller ones quite frequently during the summer, especially around the house on my flowers. This one was in the middle of the driveway and John stopped to guide it onto his hand so it would not get run over.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--NcK_s5HCJQ/Vehaj5ZP4zI/AAAAAAAAN7U/JIhXkF7neV0/s1600-h/IMG_5430%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5430" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rzfbJ1sPrsE/VehakvK2pCI/AAAAAAAAN7c/hZ4U1KoiMQA/IMG_5430_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5430" width="454" /></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-f0vT6yMhQTs/VehalsP2ekI/AAAAAAAAN7k/DXk_RRF5hGo/s1600-h/IMG_5438%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5438" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SBE-kIH2FHo/VehamauZlmI/AAAAAAAAN7s/E0fQX867cOQ/IMG_5438_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5438" width="454" /></a>I loved watching the insect watch me. I don’t know if there are any other insects that can turn their heads but Praying Mantis can. I really wonder what it was thinking of me as it followed me with it's head/eyes. They use their front legs like arms too. <br />
<br />
Another observation or supposition I have made is that I think when the first people were drawing what we all think an extraterrestrial looks like now must have modeled them after this insect. I think the little green men look a lot like this.<br />
<br />
After we admired it for a while and I took a bunch of photos John slowly walked across to my garden to set it on one of the sunflowers growing there. I haven’t seen this one again but did see another large one come scooting out from a plant I was watering a couple of days ago. <br />
<br />
By the way I love the photos of my hard working farmer husband in these photos who stopped in the middle of the day to rescue this insect. <br />
<br />
Until later,<br />

It is finished now and I have even used it once. I started out with this pattern "Travel Duffle Bag" that can be found <a href="https://www.byannie.com/shop/product/travel-bag/">here at Patterns by Annie</a>.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5ddgtvqbQCo/VeUXXz670hI/AAAAAAAAN4A/hIMmRhNec_g/s1600-h/productimage-picture-travel-bag-1429%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="productimage-picture-travel-bag-1429" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aUZHkjo-Y98/VeUXYtf16JI/AAAAAAAAN4I/nENbUVYuXos/productimage-picture-travel-bag-1429_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="productimage-picture-travel-bag-1429" width="296" /></a>This is a very large bag 21” L x 13” H x 8” deep. I followed the directions and pattern but…..as my friends say….. with changes. I never can make a bag just like an original pattern and have favorite features I like in any bag I make so just make the changes if the pattern doesn't include them if possible. I have made enough bags over the years that changing the construction of a bag doesn’t seem to be a problem and more of a puzzle if I am not sure how to accomplish what I want. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BBB7M7TdN7E/VeUXcBEj23I/AAAAAAAAN4Q/SQwmkvYdW7s/s1600-h/2015-06-22-11.17%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2015-06-22-11.17" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vHui1nQ-L0g/VeUXdFQ2vlI/AAAAAAAAN4Y/LKbp3782yVU/2015-06-22-11.17_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2015-06-22-11.17" width="342" /></a>Ok, now to see the details on the bag. One change I made to the pockets on the ends was to make one of them from mesh fabric with an elastic casing on the top. I also made navy blue cording to be seamed into the seam around the ends. I stitched in the cording as I thought it might help the fabric wear less on these seams and do like the accent of the navy. By the way I just love the fabric I chose for this bag. I purchased a pre-quilted double sided fabric for the outside and another coordinating print I used for trim and lining.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E1G4yUJWCeQ/VeUXeskjVpI/AAAAAAAAN4g/-LaneFMaLys/s1600-h/2015-06-22-11.18%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2015-06-22-11.18" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0C_60v4cKao/VeUXfZG7cxI/AAAAAAAAN4o/FBj8N2tyhl0/2015-06-22-11.18_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2015-06-22-11.18" width="342" /></a>This end is just like the pattern, no changes and the view of the front below is also made just like the pattern.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-umqOkoPr574/VeUYzxvcRJI/AAAAAAAAN40/EItEdPc155c/s1600-h/20150622_112508%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="20150622_112508" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7Fghctrfgtg/VeUY0wFyNyI/AAAAAAAAN44/QQBDD78xQvA/20150622_112508_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="342" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="20150622_112508" width="454" /></a>The backside did get one change though. Instead of putting the patch pocket in the center I made it open on both ends and placed it a little higher on the back of the bag. As you can see it will slip over our rolling suitcase to make moving it a bit easier when we are using a rolling bag.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7TFwhKxEOfE/VeUY2KuB9mI/AAAAAAAAN48/I8NYLqjApBo/s1600-h/IMG_5010%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5010" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rQJ1aLnctuI/VeUY2iNFBOI/AAAAAAAAN5E/uJdEKxCKT-M/IMG_5010_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5010" width="304" /></a>Now for a look at the inside where I made quite a few changes. The original pattern has you seam the ends and then cover the raw edges with bias tape but I like a lined bag so made a lining to fit the inside of the bag. To enable you to see I turned the entire bag inside out. One long side has a zippered pocket. Oh, by the way I quilted the lining fabric to a piece of soft and stable to help give the body of bag more shape. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-B8NziSOSVhA/VeUY5X-EcaI/AAAAAAAAN5M/DVbm6snv3TE/s1600-h/IMG_4995%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4995" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UycBxWu_KyY/VeUY6JpvEcI/AAAAAAAAN5U/r17s57ChX4w/IMG_4995_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="324" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4995" width="454" /></a>The opposite side I added a mesh zippered pocket so it will be easy to see the items I pack in this pocket.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sSJ6-IwGhwc/VeUY8jfWh4I/AAAAAAAAN5c/JzeZH69FBxQ/s1600-h/IMG_5006%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5006" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-cGoln8_jB1I/VeUY9lQy5ZI/AAAAAAAAN5k/8eyS1q45p_s/IMG_5006_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="291" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5006" width="454" /></a>Now for the lining ends – don’t want to waste that space so more pockets - I love pockets so guess what – they have pockets! One end has a mesh pocket that has a casing with elastic at the top. I made this pocket pleated at the bottom so it will hold lots of socks or what ever I want to stash there.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-RgMj6FD_sqk/VeUZATwGKKI/AAAAAAAAN5s/vL3MjlFukTo/s1600-h/IMG_4996%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4996" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DXWN-sW-9vk/VeUZBuMWb0I/AAAAAAAAN50/9Ps-aAE_l54/IMG_4996_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4996" width="454" /></a>The other end I added a pleated fabric pocket with a tab and magnetic snap. It will also hold lots of things and hopefully keep me organized. That will be an accomplishment if it works!<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kroaiqeE5VU/VeUZD5Ja8hI/AAAAAAAAN58/s3TaL6ujFYI/s1600-h/IMG_5002%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5002" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-k1v_TMucBu8/VeUZFHKLh5I/AAAAAAAAN6E/f3skc6Tb-Ug/IMG_5002_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5002" width="454" /></a>That is pretty much it but I do want to show you my zipper pulls on the front of the bag. I found and purchased a cheap necklace so took it apart and have two cute zipper pulls that make it look like they were made for my bag, the colors are perfect. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XwyyuxPzyso/VeUZHb4xOdI/AAAAAAAAN6M/Z4bT3nUoYJg/s1600-h/IMG_4993%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4993" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wHTOC9hrm3w/VeUZIOBZikI/AAAAAAAAN6U/EIVJ6kQpqFs/IMG_4993_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="254" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4993" width="254" /></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oZdWOCsM7N8/VeUZKBgOXWI/AAAAAAAAN6c/GfQLRryrUy0/s1600-h/IMG_4994%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4994" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P_i6LoKPVeA/VeUZK0Y_I_I/AAAAAAAAN6k/prvbNxSlLNw/IMG_4994_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="254" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4994" width="254" /></a>Here is one more look at my wonderful bag. We decide we all needed a bit of a break from our real life and time to sit and visit and do some stitching or work on other projects too. If you have never been to the sandhills region of Nebraska and you are passing through our state I would highly recommend you take day to drive through if nothing else. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandhills_%28Nebraska%29">Wikipedia</a> has a short history of the area and if you are driving head west on highway #2 from Grand Island and you will drive right through the heart of the sandhills and a jog off to highway #91 will take you to Brewster and <a href="http://www.unclebuckslodge.com/aboutus.html">Uncle Bucks Lodge</a>. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fhbAX-Nomnk/VdPylOKYgVI/AAAAAAAANyk/PwH8KjjbuwI/s1600-h/2015-06-09-16.33%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2015-06-09-16.33" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Cem4qLS4fTE/VdPynExvreI/AAAAAAAANys/pX_1vcYdulo/2015-06-09-16.33_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="342" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2015-06-09-16.33" width="454" /></a><br />

It is also the county seat with the court house situated in the village, would guess it is the smallest town that is the county seat in the country. We took walks each morning to stretch our legs and to smell the spicy aroma of the sandhills that hug the edges of town. If you have ever been in pastures in the sandhills you will recognize the smell. Have tried to figure it out and think it is probably a weed or grass that gives off the pleasant smell but it is very distinctive. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OEntgbEk6G0/VdPy_x4f9sI/AAAAAAAANzk/-4CTzGpYFYk/s1600-h/2015-06-10-07.20%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="2015-06-10-07.20" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YbDatXOtkN8/VdPzDuSU17I/AAAAAAAANzs/1L1XvFs_e1E/2015-06-10-07.20_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="342" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="2015-06-10-07.20" width="454" /></a>Someone made the greatest street signs, each one a different silhouette. Another treat we had every day was homemade goats milk ice cream across the street from Uncle Bucks and it was so yummy. It is self serve and you put your money in the cup in the freezer. This couple also had a self serve refrigerator with fresh eggs, goats milk, soda and treats. I had a quilt commercially quilted once and it was not a good job so have been trying to remove it a bit at a time. We tidied up our stuff each night but could leave it all there to work on the next day. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-LjRWqBxZGUs/VdP0neHqoSI/AAAAAAAAN3U/x26Wko3F3p0/s1600-h/IMG_2013%25255B2%25255D.jpg"> <img alt="IMG_2013" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-FZQ6USm7WxI/VdP0oj1OSAI/AAAAAAAAN3c/J5je2tU83xY/IMG_2013_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="325" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_2013" width="454" /></a>We had such a great time that we have plans to go back next year. We arrived on a Monday and returned home on Thursday and the other guests that arrived or departed were interested in what we were doing and would sit and chat a bit. One family with three little girls were there two nights and the little girls were so delightful. They had questions about what we were doing but also just sat with us and told us all kinds of stories. They had us four adults rolling with laughter at times.<br />
<br />
If you haven’t figured it out we loved Brewster, we loved Uncle Bucks and we loved spending time together.<br />

Until Later,<br />

It finished at 20” x 17.5”. I did add some beading and a few buttons too so check that out in the detail photos below. Some of my quilting lines do a squiggle here and there but I am trying hard not to be such a perfectionist and rip all the imperfections so they stay as first stitched.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y4yZEdk9oyg/VaZv40JH0VI/AAAAAAAANxI/pYRlorsPLkk/s1600-h/IMG_48572.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4857" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e6WfLz5vHPM/VaZv6o9UWVI/AAAAAAAANxQ/k382uumNiM0/IMG_4857_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4857" width="454" /></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-o4jeKNCzGNU/VaZv91J2LoI/AAAAAAAANxY/79JFRmIYQXQ/s1600-h/IMG_48702.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4870" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bRe7woe0o0g/VaZv_awq9ZI/AAAAAAAANxg/jW_JDtz2zP8/IMG_4870_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4870" width="454" /></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QRG23Ho-DdI/VaZwCLthnHI/AAAAAAAANxo/h8Id_lquHyc/s1600-h/IMG_48542.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4854" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eUKGZQ52Qx8/VaZwDZ4VOpI/AAAAAAAANxw/IwO0Lg8l9W0/IMG_4854_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="285" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4854" width="454" /></a>Can’t wait to see how the other challenge quilts I worked on are finished and the other groups that worked on challenge quilts. Our annual QuiltNebraska is in about a week so I don’t have long to wait.<br />

My group had 4 members. As a reminder here is my block before it went on it’s travels to get it’s borders. As a reminder here are the challenge rules -It is a round robin challenge with a team of 4-5 quilters of your choice. Each quilt will start with a 9” finished center block. You will build around the center block using borders with the following shapes—pinwheels, circles, diamonds, applique, and some embellishment. The front of the quilt must have at least one of each shape listed but you may use more of these shapes if you wish. Each quilt cannot exceed 120 total inches around. It must be quilted, bound and a label sewn on the back. <br />
<br />
I blogged about making the challenge block on <a href="http://nebraskaviews.blogspot.com/2015/04/nsqg-challenge-my-quilt.html">April 17, 2015</a> and what it looked like when I got it back in the mail after 3 friends added borders. I loved it and put it on my flannel board so I could study it and make a plan to finish it. It was fabulous and I wanted to do right by it with the quilting.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X2UyEqAvpXA/VaZtQD_ujnI/AAAAAAAANuk/BetkJDh9GEU/s1600-h/IMG_39612.jpg"><img alt="IMG_3961" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1UK852s8kwQ/VaZtRHkq93I/AAAAAAAANus/FxQUkyljqQE/IMG_3961_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="379" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_3961" width="454" /></a>I decided it needed a final border around all 4 sides so laid the quilt on the fabric choices. I do want to point out the angled border on the bottom left hand side. I liked the look one of the gals did so re-fashioned the top right hand side to have the same angle. Now it definitely has a light top and darker bottom.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-utBR1UmmZ6A/VaZtTTQg1cI/AAAAAAAANu0/P_KfP-VcTKk/s1600-h/IMG_47182.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4718" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8aW7xjOYQoI/VaZtUsfgRhI/AAAAAAAANu8/Dn1aszgIZpk/IMG_4718_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4718" width="454" /></a>Of course fate stepped in and I didn’t have enough of the lighter navy fabric for the two borders (left and top) Since it is a busy print I decided to just piece it matching the print design. I pressed under the seam allowance on one side then found it’s perfect match and used Elmers School Glue to run a small line of glue on the seam allowance, matched the fabric, and pressed it to dry the glue. I could then flip the fabric over and stitch the seam in the crease and know it would match. I pressed the seam open to make the join less visible. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-atFZPasljLQ/VaZtekfKOlI/AAAAAAAANvE/3K5zwEcv530/s1600-h/IMG_472313.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4723" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vX5Z2mdlrxY/VaZtgKA7SZI/AAAAAAAANvM/8cNZriwSKtM/IMG_4723_thumb7.jpg?imgmax=800" height="204" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4723" width="304" /></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gh3Pl9wyTbo/VaZtipjlzpI/AAAAAAAANvU/ojS5X7sNYZ8/s1600-h/IMG_472242.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4722" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IOd-W9kfqxo/VaZtjjbm62I/AAAAAAAANvc/A6nbbsxd_pw/IMG_4722_thumb34.jpg?imgmax=800" height="204" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4722" width="304" /></a>Here is the corner where the pieced border is located. I have to search and search for the spot and I am the one that pieced it! The seam is straight down from the large white headed pin….can you see it now? The seam lines up with the corner so almost looks intentional if you can see it.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3H-lNXJBYls/VaZtlxCLZVI/AAAAAAAANvk/bYvyO-PeiU4/s1600-h/IMG_5161%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_5161" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ax-Cl4BQ9NM/VaZtnPFQDWI/AAAAAAAANvs/3Lmzv6Qhqug/IMG_5161_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" height="354" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_5161" width="354" /></a>After the borders were all done and I did a little machine embroidery using the same built in stitches on my machine that I used in my block. I stitched the flower like one down the navy strip in the green border and circles around the appliqued navy circles on the left. Next on to quilting! I want you to notice the vertical lines in the quilt below. That is not machine quilting but my basting thread. I used the wash out, water soluble thread from Superior Threads called Vanish. This is the first time I have tried this technique and really like how it held the quilt together.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K1Kptbeq_dI/VaZtoxUaouI/AAAAAAAANv0/SZaDVoXEyAA/s1600-h/IMG_47552.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4755" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dKFQjjwjm6Q/VaZtqofaMqI/AAAAAAAANv8/nXy6HCGT0v0/IMG_4755_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="391" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4755" width="454" /></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zoi4RPtrrWU/VaZttqdZEmI/AAAAAAAANwE/oP4wxvfcHYk/s1600-h/IMG_47562.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4756" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8qg2CD6XzrA/VaZtvDivCkI/AAAAAAAANwM/y9wKnzRFtV4/IMG_4756_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4756" width="454" /></a>I used this thread on the top and bottom in my machine and basted the quilt top, batting and backing together using the walking foot. I did stitch from the center down and from the center out going both ways and had the lines about 1 1/2” apart then flipped the quilt over and again stitched down from the center to the outside on the other half of the quilt. I lengthened my stitch about to the maximum but didn’t use the basting stitch as that tended to gather it a bit. I could have stitched lines going the other direction but decided this was enough to hold it securely while I quilted it. I did remove some of the basting lines if they were in the way of some of my quilting lines but left the rest and removed it after I had the entire piece quilted. I just soaked it in cool water until all the thread disappeared then washed gently using Quilt Soap. I do use my bathtub so the quilt can lay flat during this process. I rinsed it several times pressing the clean water through the quilt then used a large towel and rolled the quilt and pressed down to remove some water. I lay it on another clean towel or sheet and block to make it square. I know this is rather detailed but wanted you to know how I treated the quilted quilt. Here is last bit of info. for you that I feel is very important - I don’t trim and bind the quilt until it is blocked. Yes the batting stays together during the washing/rinsing and I have found I get a quilt that is more square this way. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UUX7EpebzGc/VaZtwCkjQNI/AAAAAAAANwU/86PXEgTJURU/s1600-h/IMG_23263.jpg"><img alt="IMG_2326" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-NjWicCAWEOo/VaZtw_Dlm8I/AAAAAAAANwc/YQzOTn3ekrk/IMG_2326_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_2326" width="232" /></a>I used the following threads to quilt my challenge. As you can see there is a variety of types and brands.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EPXPr1YHMpo/VaZtzWEPd4I/AAAAAAAANwk/tBkbfMEdsZI/s1600-h/IMG_47582.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4758" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-56EwsKUnuL4/VaZt0kwvj5I/AAAAAAAANws/QqcnJcM2UmY/IMG_4758_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4758" width="454" /></a>Come back tomorrow to see the completed quilt as this post is long enough.<br />

I don’t get flowers very often so these were a surprise and I enjoyed them so much. They lasted over a week before I had to toss the last one.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_fA1zb9BjOA/VXzog1tpElI/AAAAAAAANec/u0FsLypJd4o/s1600-h/IMG_4786%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4786" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MNgGkvGmHnI/VXzohvDa_pI/AAAAAAAANek/b_QEUosber0/IMG_4786_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4786" width="454" /></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-skq-UBCBb6U/VXzoim77ZHI/AAAAAAAANes/UkgE86Mu4AY/s1600-h/IMG_4784%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4784" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fHqz9uqYPtE/VXzojVnhcCI/AAAAAAAANe0/58NqrWcd8jQ/IMG_4784_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="454" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4784" width="304" /></a><a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-O5Du2FtYMDk/VXzokaqdEHI/AAAAAAAANe8/OMYQFAbueSw/s1600-h/IMG_4787%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4787" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-peNKdoDyp2I/VXzolDTX5eI/AAAAAAAANfE/e5Hj7pL2q3g/IMG_4787_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4787" width="454" /></a><br />

Members had to choose a envelope that contained the color pallet and not open it until they were home to discover what color pallet they had to use. Each member got a different picture and color pallet and we were to use at least four of the colors in the pallet for our challenge quilt. We were to make a table runner no smaller than 10” x 20” or larger than 18” x 48”. The biggest challenge was that we had to have the piece of paper with the printed pallet with our completed challenge at the big reveal in May (not loosing it in the depths of your sewing things) plus we got the challenge in September and trying to keep it all a secret from other members until the May meeting.<br />
<br />
I already showed you my challenge a while ago and now here are the rest of the challenge pieces. They are all fantastic, enjoy. I did post a photo of mine too, it's the orange, green and brown Mariner's compass table runner. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Oig7ZqAUxZQ/VXzkDQNQcJI/AAAAAAAANaY/JWU_fo3g8TQ/s1600-h/IMG_1804%252520Verleen%252520Vorderstrasse%252520%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_1804 Verleen Vorderstrasse " border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GbKVtF14iiQ/VXzkEn2hg-I/AAAAAAAANag/DogRtdaZ1Lk/IMG_1804%252520Verleen%252520Vorderstrasse%252520_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="342" style="background-image: none; The recent rains have made the grass grow which is always good. The cows are so content to get turned out onto the green grass but by fall they will be equally content to be hauled back and turned out on the harvested corn and soybean fields for the winter.<a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Wg8686BEhvk/VXudTB84P5I/AAAAAAAANY8/sx6Yq64HPug/s1600-h/IMG_1917%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_1917" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MeSk3orE0rs/VXudTyAeNrI/AAAAAAAANZE/_PqJGe48tjc/IMG_1917_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="342" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_1917" width="454" /></a><br />

(We had a total of around 9” so had lots and lots of water.) He went especially to check on the dam in a neighboring pasture. As you can see it is full, full, full. Normally there is just a little water in the bottom but now it is to the top and backed up the valley so it was dug out a bit to lower the level to make it safer and room for more rain if it comes. Thankfully we had a few days without rain so that some of the flooding could recede and drain away but we had 1.6” on Wed. so things are wet again but not to the levels they were a week ago. A lot of the rivers, creeks and low areas have had flooding and problems in central and eastern Nebraska. We don’t get flooding very often so this is new for many residents. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-L2NXxAtmyVQ/VXudcdUvjKI/AAAAAAAANZs/E9PcSxMSQE4/s1600-h/IMG_4899%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4899" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Lo_BkWKscrA/VXuddDby-YI/AAAAAAAANZ0/SUw7EiybXvU/IMG_4899_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="304" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4899" width="454" /></a>I got up early one morning after a heavy rain during the night and went out to get some photos and captured the barn and the rain gauge (3.15” overnight – the day before we had 2.75” of rain.) You can see the water backed up behind the barn but it was not more than a foot deep at the deepest part. It took several days to all drain away since it all had to go through the one culvert under the highway and backs up whenever we get a heavy rain. I always say we have “Lake Greer” when we get heavy rains. <a href="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_jaMgpPLqwM/VXudfDvTPpI/AAAAAAAANZ8/PAO5dsrV6t4/s1600-h/IMG_4901%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="IMG_4901" border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-M0K0y4OmIFE/VXudf1dq8HI/AAAAAAAANaE/lx6tuQNBmjI/IMG_4901_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" height="224" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin: 0px auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="IMG_4901" width="454" /></a> This last photo is of our house taken at 6:30 am that day I was up early taking photos after the rain. You can see the morning sun reflected in the windows and the yard looks so pretty, although you really can’t see all the flowers that are blooming. <br />

We don’t like to complain about rain but we really can use more dry days. The corn and soybeans are really needing some sun and John will be needing to be cultivating to remove weeds before the crops get too tall. I know we will be wishing for rain before long but that is the life of a farmer - too much rain, not enough rain and a few days of it being just the right amount of moisture.<br />

Until Later,<br />
