Testing, Testing.....Testing

I am again trying to figure out how to post from my phone. I got it to work for me last spring once then either forgot what to do or did something wrong so it wouldn't work. I have a few minutes before I need to pop into the shower so here goes again.
I am going to post a photo I just took of the those last two bags to see if that will go for me too.

PS....It Worked!

Yay….Free Audio Books

I love to read books and I love to listen to books read to me!  I have been wanting to be able to download free audio books through a library and finally found out how to do it.  I have an iPod and listen to free podcasts I download from iTunes and audio books I have downloaded from either CDs I have purchased or from a free site that has books in the public domain.  LibraVox.org has lots and lots of titles to choose from but they are older books and I have listened to many over the last couple of years but wanted to listen to modern books too.

I knew I could pay to get a library card from a large library about an hour away in Hastings and get on the website to do what I wanted but didn’t want to pay the large fee to get the card every year.  Since I don’t live in that town the fees were $30-40 a year.  The little library I go to couldn’t afford to get into that program and also doesn’t have the Nebraskard for what ever reason.  To make a long story short I found I could go to the Clay Center library a little farther away from where I live, pay a $15 fee and get a library card and the Nebraskard.  The Nebraskard is honored by many Nebraska libraries and all I had to do was show the Hastings Public Library my Nebraskard and I got a card for that library with no extra fees.
Since I now have a Hastings library card I can get on the Nebraska Overdrive website and register to check out audio books that I can download directly to my computer and iPod – all for FREE.  The Clay Center Public Library is also too small to afford to do the Nebraska Overdrive web service but they can still provide their patrons a way of accessing it. This may sound like a lot of piddling around to do but it is worth it.  I quickly checked out one audio book using my Hastings Public Library card number and now have it on my iPod.  The download said I could listen to it for a week then it would no longer be available….not sure how that works yet but will see.  It is just like checking out a book from the library as there is a lending period you can listen to the book.

I just checked the main OverDrive website and this is available in other states and some other countries too.  Check out this page on overdrive.com to do a search of a library near you for this service and read up on what you have to do to get signed up.  I am thrilled with being able to do this as I listen to books or podcasts all the time when I am driving and all the time when I am sewing.

I feel like bursting into song  I am so happy but I won't....no one wants to hear me sing!

Tea Time

This cool weather sure makes my morning hot tea hit the spot.  I purchased this insulated aluminum French coffee press last year and just love using it to make my hot tea each morning.  It holds a little over 2 mugs full, just enough to sip on all morning and the tea in the pot stays warm a long time.  IMG_4429

Museum Display

What an honor to have my doll beds and the quilts I have made for them on display at the local county museum last weekend.   I took 30 of the doll beds that I have made quilts for and all but the three largest fit inside the glass case.  The town was having a celebration over the weekend so it was a short time for them to be on display but lots of people came through the museum.  For small museums they need to record and have everyone sign their guest registry as numbers of visitors determine funding so they are always looking for special displays to get more people in the door.

Here is a close up photo of some of the beds on display in the glass case.  They were not spaced out as much as I wanted them to be but did get them all in the case.  Most are too small to be just sitting out as they would be too tempting to either handle or walk off with.  I would not have had them on display without having them protected somehow.  I had made up cards with information about each bed plus the tiny Teddy Bears I had made to go with some of the beds.  I did go to the museum on Sunday to sit and visit with the people coming through and that was interesting.  Lots had questions about my tiny miniature quilts, where I got the beds, if they are hand pieced or machine pieced, how I come up with the patterns, etc.

This is the third museum where my collection has been on display besides several quilt shows over the years.  I still have about 20 doll beds without quilts stored away in my basement that someday I will get a quilt made for them.  It is fun to share them with the public as they are always surprised at the size.  Miniature quilters out there know there are a lot of tricks and tips to get that tiny piecing done but they do amaze non quilters.

If you are interested, I have shown and talked about a few of my doll beds on this blog on other posts.  You can scroll to the bottom of my blog and click on the label “doll bed” and that will bring up the ones I have written about…at least the posts I got labeled correctly.  You can also click on this LINK to take you to the doll bed pages.  There might be others under miniatures or some such label.

I am running a little heater here in the sewing room/office as it is just too chilly to be comfortable without it.  I was going to start our furnace to take the chill off and it wouldn’t work so John called the repair guy.  He was here by 10:00 am and found out the part he put in last summer to fix the air conditioner was the wrong part to run the furnace too.  The new part will be shipped to him and hopefully it will come in a day or two as the night time temps are down to the middle to low 40s now and that cools our house off just a tad bit.  We may still have hot days once this drippy, rainy weather moves on but for now it is just cold!

Until Later,
Lynn
